10 September 2021

November 30, 2021 by Neal

as I sit beneath a Tennessee sky
pondering my own dumb luck
I recognize how fortunate
I have been

always

and I know that this is not the end
that there never really is an end

just endings
and
beginnings
over and over and
over again

so i ground myself in now

right here
right now

with THANK YOU forever on my lips
and an irrepressible joy
tattooed on my heart…

i remember thinking
how strange it was
when you went away
that my love grew
teeth.

and i can’t help but laugh at how pointless it all seems now.

i wrung the wet rag
of my heart out
and left it to dry
on an old wire fence
in that little mountain town
where i still remembered
your name
